This is certain to be Paducah’s hottest event of the fall season! On Saturday, Nov. 3, the Interracial Women’s and Men’s groups will host the first Paducah Poetry Jam, 7 p.m., at Market House Theatre. It’s modeled after Russell Simmons’ Def Poetry Jam, and even included guidance from the Jam’s co-founder, Bruce George, who traveled to Paducah in September to assist with the show’s auditions. The evening’s emcee is none other that the gorgeous Marcia Alexander, a member of the Interracial Women’s Group and account executive for Bristol Broadcasting.
So get ready for a great night of racially inspired poems, short stories, essays and other prose by these wonderful performers:
• Gabe Camacho: Stepping Out or Streetwise Smartbomb
• Ingrid Shelton: Revelation
• Connie Donley: Depends on the skin you’re in…
• Mae Stray: A Slave Ship Speaks
• Betty Mollaun: Sophia Mollauu
• Jeff McGoy: Timeout for BS/Time to Digest
• Sherrie Crouch: The Wall
• Donita Crenshaw: What Would Jesus Do?
• Ronnie McIntosh: Illusions in Gray
• Marsha Cash: Believe, Believe, Believe or Can You Grip My Anger?
• Lydia Smoot: Racism
• Gladman Humbles: Finding Mama
• Michael Hensel: Shadow of the Night
Tickets are $5 at the door. Congratulations everyone!

I am praying that Paducah turns out for this event. It would be marvelous if Paducah comes ready to hear the real deal about our community rather than viewing this event solely as entertainment. Of course, we cannot expect anyone to come to hear everyday observations of race and racism, sex and sexism that may not conform to the predominant mind-set we all share in. We can ponder the comments and relate them to our lives or, we can ignore the deeper meanings and consider those who are inspired to speak do not have authority anyway. I pray it will be the former rather than the later....Loveable.
Thank you, Loveable, for your comment! It sounds like an exciting and moving night — not to be missed! xoxoxomt
Hope the works can be published for the community to purchase. Some of us were not able to attend the performance.
What a great idea! I've forwarded your note to one of the event organizers. Thank you for your comment!
