Get Up, Get Down, Get Out!

Sun reporter Adam Shull ran a nice piece in Current yesterday about our friend Tony Foo Yong, who's tearin' up the town with all sorts of great DJ shows. He brings in hot DJs from St. Louis and other cities, and he generously promotes local DJs through the Cosmic Vibe Alliance — the longtime pros along with those new to the scene like this handsome fella.

Two big shows are set for tonight and tomorrow:

The first one, Get Up, is set for Friday, Nov. 28, at Tribeca, 127 Market House Square, featuring Robitaille from St. Louis, along with Tony and G.I.J.

The second one is Get Down, set for Saturday, Nov. 29, at Toucan's, 119 Market House Square, featuring Dylan Thomas, also from St. Louis, along with other local faves Purvis, Reiek Havok and DJ Urban Kobbb.

So Get Up, Get Down and get out on the dance floor this weekend. We've got your complete Thanksgiving Entertainment Guide here!

Happy Turkey Day!

In today's Current, we three are asked: When I Think Turkey Day, I Think...

Suzanne offers up some great family movie flicks, while Patience tells a very funny story about Rex, her childhood mutt.

My answer recalled Thanksgiving 2004. Bruce Brockenborough and I had reconnected after 20 years, traveling back and forth, deciding if we were "keepers."

That Thanksgiving in Paducah was freezing. As we were leaving a lovely dinner at Bruce's parents' home, his mom gasped at my thin denim jacket. "Oh, Mary, you must wear my fur." Then I gasped. Fur? Not this San Francisco gal.

Before I could protest, she'd slipped a near full-length fur coat over my shoulders.

Oh, the softness. The warmth. I kept running my hands up and down myself. Furrrrrrr. I was an immediate convert.

For Christmas that year, Bruce surprised me with my own beautiful fur coat. And on Jan. 1, 2005, he surprised me with something else: my engagement ring.

For more on THAT story, click on over to here. Happy Thanksgiving!

Baby's Got Bustle

Today's my third anniversary to my first and last husband, Bruce Brockenborough. Yippeeee! We have an awfully cute story. By the way, we love a good love story. Email us yours, and we'll use it in an upcoming feature!

Check Us Out!

Little Black Dress Contest!

Beautiful Nancy Sutton is our first contestant in our Breakfast at Tiffany's M.A.C. Style Little Black Dress Contest!

If you're coming to the Breakfast at Tiffany's Chick Flick on Dec. 16 — and we hope you are — we invite you to send us your favorite little black dress story — where you got your dress, the most fun event you've worn it to, the best thing that ever happened to you in it, etc….

The top three favorites win prizes at the event!

Here's Nancy's fun story about her LBD, dancing with her boyfriend-now-husband and sealing the marriage deal:

"I bought this dress in Destin, Fla. My favorite event was when I wore it to a wedding reception in Nashville that was held at the Country Music Hall of Fame. While dancing my first dance EVER with my boyfriend (now husband), I realized that since he was such a good dancer, it helped 'seal the deal' on our relationship — among other things of course! A photo was taken of us dancing that night, and we used it for Christmas cards last year."

Nancy, by the way, rocked the Sex, Sushi and the City Hottest Shoes Contest by wearing these:

Dance on, Mz. Nancy!

OK, gals, send us YOUR favorite LBD story! And get your tix quick for B@T — details in the post below!

They'd Just Come from Truvy's

I meant to post this last week. Aren't they darling? These gals celebrated Anne Bidwell's birthday at last Tuesday's Maiden Alley Cinema Chick Flicks: Steel Magnolias. That's Dana Herndon, Jessica Byassee, The Birthday Girl, Marra McMillan, Shannon Wilson, Ronda Gibson and Lori Althouse in capes and curlers provided by Gayle Kaler of Chantilles. Too cute.

Here's fun little note from Anne: "Please pass along my thanks to everyone involved in the Chick Flicks tonight. It was just wonderful! Coffee and cupcakes never tasted so good. You guys are coming up with great ideas, and it is so nice to know the fun we had tonight will help fund two very important aspects of our community. I can't wait for December!"

In case you didn't make it, the coffee and commemorative Chick Flicks mugs were supplied by the fabulous Etcetera Coffeehouse, and the cupcakes and armadillo cake were provided by Kirchhoff's. Complimentary hankies were provided by the series' lead sponsor Contemporary OB/GYN. René Advertising and iList Paducah are co-sponsors. And the proceeds are divided between M.A.C. and the Merryman House.

More details on the Chick Flicks series, including the next one — Breakfast at Tiffany's, Dec. 16 — are here!

Bellewood Offers New Foster Care Program

Super cute Paducah Sun reporter Angie Kinsey offered up some good news this past Saturday from the lovely Bellewood Homes for Children. The group, which helps foster kids, 18-21, make a smooth transition into independent living, is now offering a therapeutic foster care program for kids who have been abused and/or neglected.

That's cute, cute, cute Craig Felker and Gwen Taylor of Bellewood, helping one of their clients with some housing information. Craig and Gwen are the BEST and are totally sweet to work with.

If you've ever thought about becoming a foster parent, Bellewood can help get you get started. You must complete 46 hours of training, plus 30 more hours each year. Once you welcome a child (or children!) into your home, you'll receive $1,650 (per child) plus a $50 monthly clothing allowance. Um, that's for the kid — not you, so don't be getting any big ideas! You'll also be reimbursed for mileage, birthdays, school stuff, etc...

For more info on this wonderful program, call Gwen, 443.8181, or send her an email.

City of Paducah Holiday Cards On Sale Now!

Get your holiday cards 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday, at the City Hall Finance Department office, first floor, 300 South 5th St. These beautiful cards are based on a painting by beautiful Paducah artist Margie Cissell-Smith. Each year, the PAPA Gallery selects a theme — in this case, the river industry — and then artists submit paintings for consideration. The Mayor and City Commissioners vote on their favorite.

For this year's card, they picked Margie's painting, "Holiday Delivery," which depicts a towboat and barge traveling along the Ohio River. On the barge is a Christmas tree lit by a spotlight on the towboat. The inside reads “Merry Christmas and Happy New Year."

The cards are $6 for a package of 10. Last year, the city sold out of the cards pretty quickly, so head down soon to pick up yours. The cost, by the way, covers printing charges — the city doesn't profit from the sale.

Here's Something Fun Today

Word on the street is that a few tickets are still available — so just come on and pay at the door! See you there!

Back From the Brink

It's been kinda quiet around here because I've had a raging, debilitating sore throat since Thursday — the kind where all you want to do is hang out and watch back episodes of Entourage, although that's pretty much what I want to do all the time anyway, but that's beside the point.

I needed to snap out of it and, thanks to the Amazing Goddess Known as Christi Bonds of Integrative Medicine of Kentucky, I'm actually up and showered and dressed today, and I'm even going to venture outside.

That's thanks to these handy miracle pills that Christi brought over on Friday: Isatis Gold and Jade Screen. And the little ginger-flavored Gin-Gins that I've been sucking on for 48 hours straight. I gotta tell ya: They work.

With cold and flu season upon us, Christi recommends taking a few Jade Screen every day — these little guys help you build up a shield against all the icky germs that are gonna start floating around. If you do feel any cold or flu symptoms, take Isatis Gold right away — this Goldenseal and Echinacea blend works, but you have to use it as soon as possible.

On top of that, a little acupuncture absolutely seals the deal. Christi poked me around my eyebrows and nose yesterday. It hurt, but I woke up feeling a ga-zillion times better this morning.

I hear Christi's Healing Angels art show was packed this past Friday! If you want to see it, stop her HeART of Healing Gallery, 233 North 7th St., any Saturday. And pick up some of these miracle pills and get a little acupuncture while you're at it! Thanks, Christi! Her number, by the way, is 442.2324.

Get a slice tonight at our Steel Magnolias Chick Flick! Sabrina Ryan, wife of Kirchhoff's baker, Baker, made it for us! Too cute!

Speaking of Amazing Races

Join us this Saturday, Nov. 22, for the Project AIDS Orphan One World Run! The 5K race (just twice around Noble Park) starts at 9 a.m., and takes place in Paducah, San Francisco, Atlanta, Santa Fe, Louisville and in international locations like Switzerland, France, New Zealand, Canada, Costa Rica and, of course, Kenya, where Project AIDS Orphan is making a wonderful difference in the lives of children there who have been orphaned by AIDS.

Come a little early and warm up to the tunes of DJ Urban Kobbb. We'll have an iList Paducah booth there, as will several other race sponsors.

Sign up here. It's just $18. You get a super-cool T-shirt and all the money raised will go to educate, clothe, feed and provide medicine to orphans in the small village of Kandaria. Check out our iList Paducah story!

It will be totally fun — please come and support the great work of this organization!

The Amazing Race

So my pal Judy Tierney and I ran together in what I have to say was the best race ever this past Sunday. The San Antonio Rock-n-Roll was incredible! Great course, bands everywhere, CROWDS of supporters everywhere — and, note to US Half Marathon in San Francisco organizers who cruelly ran out of water at the last three or four stops: there was WATER everywhere!

On top of that, they were handing out little PowerBar Goo stuff about halfway through, vaseline for chafers and, toward the end, icy-cold wet sponges so we could give ourselves a little sponge bath before crossing the finish line.

I'm telling ya, this race was swish.

And the best part: post-race refueling on the Riverwalk — that's Bruce Brockenborough, of course, who kicked 'tocks and finished the half-marathon in 2 hours 10 minutes. Jude and I were in the 2 hours 31 minutes category because one of us (me) insisted on muchas walk breaks.

Nonetheless, it was a fabulous race, which I highly recommend to anyone for next year. Be sure to carbo-load at Boudro's on the Riverwalk the day before — that's Maegan, nourishing us with gaucamole that she makes right at the table....

...and you can never hydrate too much! Start with a prickly pear margarita and taper off with una mas Dos Equis, and you'll be good to go!

You may recall that Judy and I did the More magazine half-marathon in NYC in April. We're looking for another good one to do in January or February — any suggestions?

Free Event Advice! Ouiser!

Downtown Paducah is the place to be tonight — actually, two places to be! I'm hoping our 20/30 Group DOC Talk draws a nice crowd. The subject is new ways to promote events in Paducah, after all. So having folks there, you know, would be a good thing! We have some really cool panelists — the beautiful Laura K, of course, and hotties David Boggs, Tony Foo Yong, Adam Shull and moderator Gabe Camacho. I'm in on it, too, and hope we can share some new ideas.

Come at 5:30 p.m. and hear DJ Urban Kobbb and enjoy iList Paducah-hosted hors d'oeuvres and libations. The panel is from 6-7 p.m.

Then cut out early — or rush over afterward — for Maiden Alley Cinema's next Chick Flick: Steel Magnolias. Enjoy armadillo cupcakes and spiced-up coffee beforehand, then grab your hankies and head in for the movie. The details are here. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with the movie at 7:15 p.m. $20, benefiting Maiden Alley Cinema and the Merryman House Domestic Crisis Center.

Beauty and the Bruise

They're athletes. They're tough. They're artists. They're pierced and tattooed. They're beautiful. And, after they achieve a certain level in practice, they get to have super cool roller derby names, to boot.

Meet the Radioactive City Rollergirls at 8 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 19, at Jeremiah's, 225 Broadway! Drinks, prizes, live music — and those gorgeous gals who bring beauty to the bruise.

Doubt - A Parable: It'll Make You Wonder

Doubt you'll find Doubt — A Parable entertaining? Think again. This Tony award- and Pulitzer Prize-winning play is the hottest thing on Broadway now, and the movie version, starring Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman, opens in December.

The fabulous Market House Theatre is in the middle of its own version, featuring Jody Smith as Father Flynn, Renie Barger as Sister Aloysius, Jennifer Carder as Sister James and Dvonne Miller as Mrs. Mueller, whose young son, Donald, is the only African American student at a Catholic school, set in 1964.

That's Sister Aloysius above, suggesting to Mrs. Mueller that Father Flynn has been up to no good with her boy. Mrs. Mueller, seemingly willing to turn a blind eye, just wants to get her boy through the year and then into a good high school. (That's Todd Hatton from WKMS on the right, taping the rehearsal for WKMS.)

Was there misbehavior? Was there not?

"Some people will leave thinking convinced that the priest is guilty," says super hottie director Michael Cochran. "Others will be convinced that he's not guilty. We've worked hard to make sure that at the end of the play, there's doubt."

See what you think. Catch the play this Thursday-Saturday, 7:30 p.m., or Sunday, 2:30 p.m. And listen to Todd's interview with cast members on WKMS. You'll be talking about it for days.

Get Up! Get Down!

Those hottie DJs from the Cosmic Vibe Alliance are throwin' down two great shows over Thanksgiving weekend.

The first one, Get Up, is set for Friday, Nov. 28, at Tribeca, 127 Market House Square, featuring Robitaille from St. Louis, along with local faves Tony Foo Yong and G.I.J.

The second one is Get Down, set for Saturday, Nov. 29, at Toucan's, 119 Market House Square, featuring Dylan Thomas, also from St. Louis, along with other local faves Purvis, Reiek Havok and my own personal favorite DJ, DJ Urban Kobbb.

Check 'em both out. Cuz you'll need to be backing away from that turkey at some point!

Saving Face

Our pal Donna-Maria Walker's latest WKYX column gives a shout-out to the Carson Center and to iList Paducah. It's a Classic!

Ouiser Boudreaux: I'm not crazy, I've just been a very bad mood for the last 40 years!

Truvy: I have a strict policy that nobody cries alone in my presence.

Clairee Belcher: The only thing that separates us from the animals is our ability to accessorize.

Truvy: I don't like her. I don't trust anyone who does their own hair. I don't think it's natural.

Break out your bashful and blush and revisit with Ouiser, Truvy, Clairee, Annell, Shelby and all of our other wonderful southern role models! If you haven't sent your check in yet for Steel Magnolias, now's the time!

It's going to be big fun, with red velvet cupcakes from Kirchhoff's (remember the armadillo groom's cake?) and festive coffee served in commemorative Chick Flicks coffee mugs from Etcetera Coffeehouse.

Details on the Maiden Alley Chick Flicks page!

Look Who's Blogging Again!

Yep, we're back! In today's Current, we're asked about the last song that stuck in our heads. Suzanne The Over Thinker manages to fit a Maria Callas aria in between all the other thousands of thoughts that compete for brain space at any one given time. Patience goes for "Mamma Mia!" followed closely by "Brother Where Art Thou."

I get hung up on "Hung Up" by Madonna. And not just the song itself, but the video.

Have you seen the video? Have you seen her? At 50, Madonna looks better than ever. And "Hung Up," her biggest selling single to date, has been hung up in my brain all year long.

I'm an Internet addict. Web sites, blogs, email, Twitter, Facebook— I love it all. So when it comes to choosing between surfing the Web and a good, sweaty workout, I often go to YouTube and gawk at Madonna for inspiration.

As she prances around in that hot-pink leotard and heels, I make my not-nearly-so-stylish jammies-to-sweats-and-sneakers transition and prance on down to the treadmill.

If I can slog through the San Antonio Rock-n-Roll half marathon this Sunday without crying, it's because of Madonna.

We'll see.

Hung Up on "Hung Up"

This is the video I'm talking about in the post above. It'll make you peel your fingers off your keyboard and walk around the block a few times. Madonna's a goddess.

Get Up! Thanksgiving Weekend!

Cuz that's one really good way to promote events.

Cut out early — or rush over afterward — for Maiden Alley Cinema's next Chick Flick: Steel Magnolias. Enjoy armadillo cupcakes and spiced-up coffee beforehand, then grab your hankies and head in for the movie. The details are here — and again, we'd love to see you there. Cookin' Up A Big Ol' Check

The Downtown Kiwanis Club recently presented the fabulous Anita Wyatt of St. Nicholas Family Clinic with a check for $9,087.62 as a result of the club's BBQ on the River booth this year. The big amount comes as little surprise — this club can cook! Members won 3rd Place Chicken this year, after winning Best Shoulder last year.

Downtown Kiwanis is a group of men and women dedicated to philanthropic efforts (focusing on children’s’ charities) and community service. The club meets Thursdays at noon at the Elks Lodge, 310 North 4th St. Visitors and prospective members are always welcome. For more info, email Chuck Williamson.

Hail to Our Own New Chief!

Handsome Patrick J. Withrow M.D. of iList Paducah sponsor Western Baptist Hospital has been promoted to Vice President and Chief Medical Officer — oh lĂ¡ lĂ¡! He serves as the hospital’s liaison with the medical staff of more than 240 physicians and assists in physician recruitment, program development and community education.

An interventional cardiologist, Dr. Withrow practiced at Western Baptist from 1981-2007, when he was named medical director of the Baptist Heart Center. He serves on boards for the Kentucky chapter of the American College of Cardiology and the Kentucky Medical Association. He also co-chaired the 2008 American Heart Association Heart Walk, which raised more than $100,000. Western Baptist, recently named in Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals, is ranked among the nation’s best hospitals for treatment of coronary artery disease, chest pain and cancer and breast imaging.

By the way, Western Baptist — smoke-free inside since 1992 — will ban the use of stinky tobacco on its grounds, including parking lots and the parking garage, beginning Jan. 1. Rock on, Baptist! If you're wanting to quit — and you know it's time — the hospital offers Quit Now and the Cooper-Clayton Method smoking cessation classes. Call 575.2918 for details.

Congratulations Dr. Withrow and Western Baptist!

Faces of Cancer Applications Available

The Kentucky Cancer Program is partnering again with J Nash Photography for Faces of Cancer, a photographic tribute to cancer survivors. One person from each county in the Purchase Area will be featured in the traveling photo exhibit. Deadline for applications is January 9. Photos will be taken in January and February and the exhibit will be revealed in May.

This is a really neat project, and Jeff Nash always takes such gorgeous photos — including last year's photo of the gorgeous Suzi Renaud of The Yoga Room (above). We featured the project on iList Paducah last year — have a look, and if you know anyone who'd like to participate, pass on the good word!

Paducah Dental Has Heart

In September, iList Paducah sponsor Paducah Dental Care participated in the Heart Walk at Noble Park, helping to raise thousands of dollars for the American Heart Association. Dr. Walden, Dr. Bridges and their staff (above) won the event's T-shirt contest!

Paducah Dental Care is always doing such lovely things for the community. Last month, Dr. Walden and Dr. Bridges raised $13,000 by holding a Smiles for Life campaign, giving half to Sunrise Children's Services and the other half to the Garth Brooks Teammates for Kids Foundation. Details here.

Rock on, Paducah Dental!

New Banner Ad

We just posted a new banner ad on iList Paducah — it's from the Goddess Known as Christi Bonds. Christi does acupuncture, which will change your life. And she sells these, which will rock your world.

When she's not changing our life and rocking our world, she's a visual artist. And the banner above helps promote the lovely opening of the Healing Angels show at her Heart of Healing Gallery. The show will include her work along with pieces from other local artists.

Please plan to stop by, 4:30-7:30 p.m., on Friday, Nov. 21. Her gallery is located at 233 North 7th St., with the gallery entrance on Monroe. 442.2324.

Get Your Buzz On: New Ways to Promote Your Event

Looking for new ways to promote parties, fundraisers, performances and general carryings-on? Want some suggestions on mixing new media and traditional methods to get people talking about your event?

Have we got a panel for you!

Please join us at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 18, at Jeremiah's, 225 Broadway, for the 20/30 Group DOC Talk. I'm one of the panelists, along with DJ and Promoter Tony Foo Yong, Marketing and PR Pro Laura K, Paducah Renaissance Events Coordinator David Boggs, Paducah Sun Entertainment Reporter Adam Shull and the Paducah Writers Group's Gabe Camacho.

We'll start with some wine, beer and hors d'oeuvres hosted by iList Paducah (because, frankly, free food and booze is ONE great way to get people tat event) and some great music by DJ Urban Kobbb (ditto). Then we'll get down to telling you everything we know. Hopefully, with our ideas mixed with your ideas, you'll come away from this DOC Talk with some new things to try out.

So please join us. It will be great for new PR and marketing types, non-profit groups that want to improve their events and other groups that are just getting started or just want some fresh suggestions.

Plus, it's free and it will be fun. Because free and fun are yet two OTHER ways to get people to come to your event.

Please RSVP so we'll know how many folks to expect. Hope to see you there. And go see Steel Magnolias afterward!

One World Run: Nov. 22

Project AIDS Orphan has a fun event coming up — it's the One World Run set for 9 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 22, in Noble Park. The run is taking place in Paducah, San Francisco, Atlanta, Santa Fe, Louisville and in international locations like Switzerland, France, New Zealand, Canada, Costa Rica and, of course, Kenya, where Project AIDS Orphan is making a wonderful difference in the lives of children there who have been orphaned by AIDS.

We'll have an iList Paducah story on it this week, but if you want to go ahead and sign up for it, use the form, here. It's just $18. You get a super-cool T-shirt and all the money raised will go to educate, clothe, feed and provide medicine to orphans in the small village of Kandaria.

I'm in. And so's DJ Urban Kobbb. He's going to run and deejay at the same time!

Little Black Dress Ball: Nov. 15

The action starts with cocktails, of course, at 6:30 p.m.

Latest Biz Journal Column

The November Four Rivers Business Journal came out the other day. It's published by the Paducah Sun and goes to Chamber members, but I think you can pick up a copy at the Sun or the Chamber, or read it online.

I write The Internet column, and in this issue featured tips from several friends and colleagues on how to use social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace and Twitter. Click the image above to enlarge and read some good advice from Crystal Hutchison Jeter, Laura Thornton, Micah Redding, Ashley Sanders and Lisa Lauck.

My December column will feature how to pull off online promotions. If you're doing anything fun to promote your product or service using your Web site, blog or social networking sites, send me an email and I'll try to include it in the column. Um, email me soon because my deadline is today.

Holiday Posh!

The holiday issue of Posh magazine is out, featuring the beautiful homes of Sarah McGee, Craig A. Carter and Reva Harper, along with Shopping with Jenna, a great recipe for Buche de Noel from Sidonie Watson and an artist spotlight on Karen Utz of Philosophy Gallery in LowerTown. There's also some fun party pix from Jungle Boogie at Toucan's and BBQ on the River. Congratulations to writers Pat Brockenborough, Jenna Wise and Donna Kay Carlson and photographer Jeff Nash!

Check it out online or stop by the Sun's office to pick up a copy!

Hey, Partner!

It's Nikki May in last Thursday's Current! Nikki, of course, is my iList Paducah partner. She's a wonderful artist and graphic designer, and she makes the iList Paducah site and weekly emails absolutely gorgeous. Fun to read what she listens to while she works! Cute, cute, cute, no doubt about it!
