Plans are fermenting for the annual Wine Tasting and Auction set for Thursday, April 15, at the Carson Center. Featured wine expert: Kentucky's own Dr. Tom Cottrell, known as the Wine Doc. Dr. Cottrell has started and perfected Napa Valley wineries since 1970, and today consults for the wine industry based out of his lab in Winchester, Ky. Dr. Cottrell will be host/expert/teacher at the Grand Tasting, which is part of the event. These are extremely fun small, seated, educational tastings of four top wines. The overall event will, as usual, feature fantastic wine and gourmet food — we'll post all the scoop on the Wine Tasting and Auction event page shortly. And, of course, the auction part will again be fab! God's Favorite Opens Feb. 4 at MHT!

Rehearsals are under way for the very funny Neil Simon comedy, God's Favorite, which opens at Market House Theatre Thursday, Feb. 4. The show plays Feb. 4-7 and Feb. 11-14. Above, that's Tom Dolan, middle, as Long Island business tycoon Joe Benjamin in this modern-day story of Job. To his right are Allyson Tracy and Landon Baker (playing Joe's twins Ben and Sarah) and Joey Judd, playing oldest son David. To the far left: Dvonne Miller and Steve Schwetman playing maid and butler Mady and Morris. And seated is Lisa Humphrey as Joe's high-maintenance wife Rose. The show also stars Al Knudsen playing Sydney Lipton, who claims to be a messenger of God. Tom and Al played these same roles in MHT's 1996 production. Diane Byrd directs, with Valerie Pollard as assistant director. "This show is extremely funny," Al says. "Be sure to wear rubber pants when you come." Tickets are on sale now!

The Drowsy Chaperone, Get Tix for Tonight!

Two thumbs up and several big belly laughs for The Drowsy Chaperone at the Carson Center! My pal Stacy Brown and I so enjoyed it last night — a big, big recommend if you're looking to warm up your laugh cords. The stunningly talented cast (including Britt Hancock as Feldzieg, above) performs again tonight at 7:30 p.m. Never heard of it? Think the title is, well, a big yawn? Evidently, lots of other folks have heard of it — the show won five Tony awards when it opened on Broadway in 2006 — the most Tony awards of any musical that year. It was nominated for 13. And rightfully so. It's constant fun, with gorgeous costumes, a clever set and a Broadway-caliber cast with beautiful voices, spot-on comedic timing, a good bit of dancing and just an all-around sense of fun. It's billed as a comedy within a musical and a show within a show. The curtains open to a present-day, though a bit shabby, living room, with an old-school musical theatre-adoring (not so much the new stuff), oversized-cardigan-wearing commentator, simply called "Man in Chair" sitting in his armchair. He's struggling with a case of the blues ("non-specific sadness"), so he breaks out his favorite remedy — his LP record of the (fictitious) 1928 musical, The Drowsy Chaperone. After the overture ("musical appetizer"), The Drowsy Chaperone cast comes to life, bursting through his refrigerator, window and Murphy bed doors. And his dingy apartment is transformed into an ever-changing Broadway set. Man in Chair then guides us through the show, inserting adoring and inside observations along with a sprinkling of cynical "I hate this scene"-types of critiques. He even joins in on a few dance numbers himself. We watch the story unfold of a beautiful Broadway starlet willing to give up the spotlight to marry her handsome fiancé. Her producer connives to bust the whole thing up to keep her in his show (or else the two pun-happy gangsters posing as bakers will give him his "just desserts"). There's mistaken identity, mayhem, spit takes, smoking tap dancing shoes and more vaudeville-meets-stunning stage production action as the 17 wonderful characters take us back to the times of the Ziegfeld Follies, the Marx Brothers, Fred and Ginger, George and Gracie and the rest of the glamorous gang. "The show has such fun characters, and it pays homage to those jazz-age musicals that you don’t see very much any more," says Britt Hancock, who plays the producer, Feldzieg — like Ziegfeld, just a little backward. "I saw it on Broadway in 2006, fell in love with it and knew I wanted to do it." Stacy and I were both in awe of the "Show Off" number, where the starlet magically appears in costume after costume in seemingly seconds. That red get-up was to die for. And I loved the ending with Trix, the Aviatrix. You gotta be a real grumpy crank-a-rama not to at least get a good chuckle during this show. Look, it's fixin' to get cold again. Snow's a-comin'. We're all worried about another power outage (you'll be reminded of that at one point during the show). And tax time is around the corner. So get your tix for tonight and stock up on some laughter, energy and fun. Plus, it's always good to get a firsthand reminder of how lucky we are to have a beautiful performing arts center right in our own backyard. And if you go to Tribeca beforehand, there's $4 margaritas.

The local dance contest was held Saturday, May 21, at Kentucky Oaks Mall, sponsored by the Carson Center and Electric 96.9, with hunky AJ in the Morning as the emcee. We'll post the video highlights shortly so you can actually see Daniel — and the two Groovaloo dancers with him — in action. The dancers, Little Bob and Double O, were the judges. Bill Fox has the coolest job ever. He works at the Carson Center and, as part of his gig, he gets to take photos at all the events and shows. Here are a few from the best concert ever — Foreigner — which performed Friday, Jan. 22. DJUK wrote a really nice review of Foreigner prior to the show. That's my new friend Jeff Pilson — I got to interview him by phone a few weeks ago. DARLING. Mick Jones, the group's founder. Incredibly awesome at 66. Lead singer Kelly Hansen — hot-blooded, no doubt about it. And drummer Brian Tichy, who bounces his drum stick off his snare, it ricochets upward at least 50 feet and he catches it on the way down without even looking. Amazing. Western Baptist Donates Supplies to Haiti

Western Baptist Hospital donated almost 100 pounds of medical supplies today to Paducah native Paul Mazzone to take to Haiti later this week with a medical team. That's Paul above, right, with Scott Ware, the hospital's COO. “It’s a terrible disaster in Haiti, and we’re glad to be able to contribute to the earthquake relief effort,” Ware says. “We’re happy Paul is going and representing our community. We can be here in Paducah and still be a part of the relief effort there.” The hospital donated 1,025 doses of injectable items, mostly antibiotics and anesthetics for surgical procedures; 7,860 doses of oral antibiotics and antifungal drugs; enough eye drops to treat more than 140 eye infections and enough topical antibiotics to treat approximately 1,500 skin infections, according to Barry Eadens, Western Baptist pharmacy director. Paul, 24, a 2003 graduate of Paducah Tilghman High School, is an emergency room technician at Roper Hospital in Charleston, S.C. The son of Mike and Darlene Mazzone of Paducah, he graduated with a degree in biochemistry from the College of Charleston in 2007. Paul worked in radiology transport at Western Baptist in the summer of 2003. “I was really amazed that on such short notice there was such an outpouring of support from the community,” says Paul, who collected about $1,000 from family and friends. “I talked to a member of our group and told him I was picking up 100 pounds of donated drugs, and he was a little taken aback by it. I told him that’s the value of living in a supportive community. I’m very proud to represent Paducah and Western Baptist and deliver this significant contribution they’ve made.” Paul will leave Thursday and stay about two weeks. The group will work about 60 miles northeast of Port au Prince in a clinic in Thomassique and a nearby hospital in Hinche. The mission is sponsored by Medical Missionaries, a non-profit organization in Manassas, Va., representing 200 doctors, nurses, dentists and others. International service is not new to Paul. In college, he did an internship in Dresden, Germany, and worked on a research project in collaboration with the University of Oslo, Norway. In 2008, he worked six months with a non-profit group in Hue, Vietnam, to improve the education of children. He spent the next eight months working in a vegan reforestation community in southern India. Right on Paul and Western Baptist!

United Way Offers Haitian Relief

The Paducah-McCracken County United Way chapter just sent an email with three very easy ways to help our friends in Haiti. One way is by contributing to the United Way Worldwide disaster fund, itself. This fund goes toward providing access to health care and services to meet the basic needs of food, clothing and shelter, as well as school and housing reconstruction. We can also donate $5 by texting "Haiti" to 864833 (UNITED). The Red Cross has served as a leading organization in response to the Haitian crisis. Relief efforts include the transport of medical supplies, blood, medical professionals, search effort services, and supplies such as blankets and hygiene products. Make a donation online or text the word "Haiti" to 90999 to make a $10 contribution. On a national level, The Salvation Army has already provided food for 7,000 Haitians and medical care to hundreds. A supply line has also been established in Port Au Prince, where invaluable resources have arrived. Make a donation online or text the word "Haiti" to 52000 to make a $10 contribution. McNabb Elementary 4th grader Eric Rodrigues, Morgan Elementary 3rd grader Sakura Smith and Clark Elementary 2nd grader Emily Parks each have a new set of wheels — well, a set of two wheels — thanks to the Downtown Kiwanis Club's Read to Ride program. The rockin' Kiwanis Club members donate bikes, helmets and locks to these schools, which then award them to the students who accumulate the most reading points. Dang. That sure beats the bag Hershey's Kisses that I normally scored after bringing home good report cards. And just the chocolate ones. The fancy ones with almonds and all that weren't invented yet. This is the second year for Read to Ride program, and the Paducah Kiwanis wants to give a special shout out to Bike World for providing the rides at a reduced rate. Telethon of Stars Rocks a Half-Million Dollars!

The Lions Club of Paducah and WPSD Local 6 are pleased to announce that the 53rd Annual Telethon of Stars raised a whopping $506,203.54 for Easter Seals West Kentucky in Paducah, T.L.C. of Southern Illinois in Carterville, Community Developmental Services in Martin, Tenn. and Easter Seals Southeast Missouri. All centers serve individuals with differing abilities and other special needs. The 15-hour Telethon of Stars was held Nov. 14 and 15 at the Carson Center. You may recall we featured hottie Aaron Loveland of musical group Ball in the House as our iDate that week. It's not too late to donate! Mail a check to Telethon of Stars, c/o BB&T Bank, PO Box 1416, Paducah, Ky. 42002 or donate online. Deadline: Jan. 31, 2010. Minor Birthday Rant

For the three or four people who aren't already aware of the fact - today is my birthday. No, not my 29th birthday. I'm happy to admit to being 42, because I love where I am in my life right now. I moved to Paducah from Atlanta six years ago this week and I couldn't be happier with my decision to do so. Culture shock? Absolutely. Regret? Not at all! I have never in my 42 years felt so much a part of an amazing community of such caring people. Moving to Paducah was exactly the right decision for me and meeting and partnering with Mary Thorsby was one of the best things I could have ever done. I love you, Mary Thorsby - and I love you, Paducah!

OMG! OMG! It's no secret how incredibly star-struck I am. I've demonstrated it several times now at the Carson Center and embarrassed myself (and a certain very close relation of mine) on more than one occasion when meeting prominent politicians. So you can imagine how excited I get every time I have the chance to interview someone famous. And I'm fixin' to have a minor breakdown over the thought of interviewing Jeff Pilson, the bassist for Foreigner. (That's him on the left.) Foreigner! That rockin' group that burned up the charts and cassette tape players in the '80s and '90s with 14 top 20 hits like Hot Blooded, Cold as Ice, It Feels Like the First Time, Waiting For a Girl Like You, Juke Box Hero and my favorite, Urgent. They're performing at the Carson Center on Friday, Jan. 22. You can buy tickets now. I'm preparing for our interview now — it's Thursday morning over the phone, and I'm nervous as all get out. Please use the comment button if you have any pressing questions for him. I'll just tell you right of the bat, he's married and has a very cute daughter — I've already asked his publicist. You know, first things first. So anyway, look for that interview in our iList Paducah Carson Center column in the coming weeks. In the meantime, Foreigner is up for a Favorite Rock Performance vote THIS WEEK ONLY. Just go to this Web site and look for the box below the ad on the right-hand side and click Foreigner. They're currently behind Lynyrd Skynyrd and just trailing Sister Hazel, so let's see if we can push 'em ahead. The winner will be brought to the Web site's TV show to perform at the end of December.
